This pair of table mats is made from hand-spun sheep wool yarn. It is woven in the traditional Changthang style, on a portable backstrap loom characteristic for the nomadic communities. The design depicts dice which have been extensively used in the nomadic culture, being a tool to decide on when to move camps, who will be the next village head and of course, also as a game. Two panels are stitched together in the center with a traditional stitching technique of the Changthang nomads. It is spun and woven by our team of settled nomads close to the city of Leh. Please note: This textile is entirely made by hand. Irregularities in thickness of yarn are characteristic to the craft of handspinning. Sometimes, the width in panels varies slightly.
